Psychosocial hazards are any psychological or social factors within the workplace that can potentially cause harm to employee health, safety and well-being. Common psychosocial hazards include (but are not limited to) job demands, poor support, poor organisational justice, low job control, bullying and intimidation, work-related violence and aggression, conflict in the workplace and traumatic events/material.
Impacts of exposure to psychosocial hazards can be serious for both individual employees and the organisation. Workplaces must, under WHS/OHS legislation, engage in the risk management process to identify, assess and control psychosocial hazards. Awareness and training regarding these hazards is an important aspect of an employer’s legal responsibilities.
